First, what exactly is Erectile Dysfunction?
Commonly referred to as ED or impotence, Erectile Dysfunction is the inability for a man to achieve or maintain an erection during sexual activity. This condition can affect any man, regardless of age, and make it challenging to keep a healthy sex life. In a life time, most men will have performance issues at one point or another, but there are signs to look for, to reveal if it’s a temporary situation or something that requires attention.
Two major symptoms of ED include a decreased sex drive (or even an inexistent one) for weeks or months at a time, as well as being unable to have an erection for a long period of time or at all. Without prompting interest in unconventional medicines, a doctor will be quick to prescribe you that little blue pill among other pharmaceutical treatments but, if you’re hesitant to believe that’s the only option and are looking for a more natural approach, it’s important to know natural cures are possible and research backs up the natural treatments listed further on.
What causes ED?
It may not be surprising to learn that the most common factors that cause Erectile Dysfunction include heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, BUT so do sleep disorders, the type of medication you take, and even by drinking alcohol and smoking. When addressing ED and diagnosing the underlying causes, you should also consider any current mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, stress, or if you’re experiencing serious trouble in a relationship.
Even though battling ED is not uncommon and symptoms may occur from an ordinary activity, it is still not a problem you want to ignore. Erectile Dysfunction can be an embarrassing topic to discuss, even admit to, but if left untreated, it can lead to more serious complications and begin to interrupt your everyday living. Individuals with chronic ED may suffer from an unsatisfactory sex life, low self-esteem, high anxiety, depression, and can destroy your relationships. You could also begin to struggle with the feelings of inadequacy and hopelessness, which may lead to other long-term consequences.
If you have tried to beat ED and still find yourself facing the same issues, there is absolutely nothing to worry about! There are a number of treatments and therapies to prevent this condition from becoming (or continuing to be) long term. With a variety of solutions, there is truly something for everyone.
We’ve Got the Remedy
For years and years and years and years (okay, you get the point) plants and herbs have been used for a countless amount of amazing things. For example, giving your body extra nourishment, serving as a natural remedy for an illness, or even treating a wound.
But, if you’re still on the fence about a natural remedy approach to ED, there are many benefits to consider. Herbal medicine can often be more affordable than conventional medicine and can be done at your convenience. Because you’re using a natural healing approach, there are fewer side effects than a prescription drug and could possibly even improve your metabolism and strengthen your immune system in the process.
Now to the good stuff! The following remedies could be your solution to a happy, healthier sex life:
Also known as red ginseng, it is referred to as the herbal Viagra and has some serious research behind it! In 2008, ED researchers (yep, that’s a thing) found three doses of red ginseng (600-1,000 mg) has, “suggestive evidence,” to treat ED. Furthermore, they found Panax Ginseng is a super effective choice for men with high lipids in their blood and who suffer from metabolic syndrome. This herb is known for its anti-inflammatory powers and improving blood flow, which are two things that are shown to reduce Erectile Dysfunction.
*Ginseng has been shown in studies to cause insomnia, so please talk to your doctor before starting the supplement. There are also other types of ginseng available, most showing improvements in patients with ED.
Up next on the list of natural treatments for ED is Rhodiola Rose. Researchers found that 26 out of the 35 men who took 150-200 mg of this herb for three months, experienced substantially improved sexual function. This could be because the herb is known to improve energy. ? ?All night long….? ?
Short for Dehydroepiandrosterone (and please don’t ask us to spell that ever again,) is a natural hormone supplement. In fact, it’s one of the most abundant circulating steroids in humans. DHEA is produced in the adrenal glands, gonads and the brain and can be converted to estrogen and testosterone in the human body. Another group of ED researchers found men with Erectile Dysfunction were more likely to have low levels of Dehydroepiandrosterone (now we’re just showing off). The research also discovered men who took DHEA for six months were more likely to achieve and maintain an erection.
*The studies show DHEA is safe in low doses, but can cause acne in some rare cases.
This is an amino acid, also naturally created by the human body. Taking it as a supplement helps relax blood vessels enough to develop a successful erection. Some studies show high doses of L-arginine help ED by allowing blood vessels to open wider, improving blood flow. Survey says… (dramatic pause) 31% of men who took 5-grams of the substance saw significant improvements in sexual function. But wait! There’s more: A second study showed L-arginine combined with a plant product, pycnogenol, restored 80 % (!) of the participants? sexual ability after two months, and (wait for itttttt) after three months, 92% of participants? sexual ability was restored.
Acupuncture is the insertion of very thin needles in your skin, through strategic parts of the body. It’s one of the world’s most ancient therapies and is used to treat everything from stress to pain to respiratory disorders… so why not give it a try for ED?
Although these studies aren’t as conclusive as the others, many show positive results when treating ED with acupuncture. A study dating back to 1999 reveals acupuncture improved the quality of erections in 39% of participants and completely restored their sexual activity. Other treatments have showed mixed results but, it’s worth a shot, right?
This is a supplement found in Africa, extracted from the bark of the Yohimbe tree. A few studies reveal positive effects on sexual performance among men using the substance, but the American Urological Association is not on board. They state there’s not enough evidence proving it works for treating ED and can actually have damaging side effects. So, if you’re interested in this option, definitely talk to your doc!
If you’ve tried other natural remedies and haven’t seen your desired results, this one is a great choice, as it’s a more powerful alternative. Studies show this supplement, when combined with Viagra, can improve erectile dysfunction better than just taking Viagra alone, so it’s an awesome combination to consider.
Research shows Gingko can increase blood flow to the penis, leading to improved sexual desire. Even so, when taking Gingko, there is an increased risk of bleeding so before starting the supplement, it is extremely important to talk to your doctor.
Horny Goat Weed (Epicedium)
The name says it all, doesn’t it? Although it has a clever and suggestive name, there is few studies that prove the help in performance but there are, allegedly, substances in the leaves of the herb that improve sexual performance.
There are other options and solutions to consider but unlike the remedies listed above, these options have a substantial less amount of research and statistics to back them up when treating ED. These supplements include Zinc, Ashwagandha and Ginkgo Biloba.
What’s up Doc?
No matter what remedy you’re interested in pursuing to treat your ED, whether plant, herb, or supplement, it is critical that you talk with your doctor before trying any of the treatments listed above or even different remedies you’ve read elsewhere.
If you feel that one of these options is a great fit for you, tell your doctor you’re interested in trying a natural treatment, even bringing in the full list above if you have more questions. Your doctor will take into account your age, weight and health and together, you both can decide the best natural supplement to go with.
If you’re unsure of using a natural remedy just yet, but still want to see improvement in that area, lifestyle changes can also have an incredible impact regarding ED. Simple changes such as adding cardio, weight training, and more heart healthy foods into your daily routine, as well as quitting the use of cigarettes and alcohol, can naturally improve blood flow and performance.
